HOW TO BECOME A US CITIZEN

There are five steps that one must take in order to become a US citizen.

1. Submit an Application

To apply for naturalization you must submit an Application for Naturalization (N-400) to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

2. Fingerprinting

Approximately two or three weeks after you send the application to USCIS, you will receive a  notice for an appointment to be fingerprinted.

3. Interview and Citizenship Test

After they get your fingerprints, USCIS will schedule your interview. During this interview, an officer will ask you questions about the information on your naturalization application (N-400) and test your English and knowledge of U.S. history and government.

4. Oath Ceremony

Congratulations! Your application has been approved and you are ready to become a Citizen! Once your application is approved, you will receive a notice from USCIS to attend an Oath ceremony to obtain your certificate of naturalization.

5. Register to Vote!

At this point, you will be a U.S. citizen! That means that you will be able to apply for a U.S. passport and register to vote in U.S. elections. Citizens have full rights and protections under the United States Constitution. Non-citizens, even lawful permanent residents with long-term residency in the United States, may face the loss of their status under certain circumstances resulting from changes in immigration law.
